There's also 15 chapters in Dead Space 2 as opposed to Dead Space's 13, so weighing the "amount" of content in each game, you're talking 23% of Dead Space 1's content being replaced by "action" (which I would argue was still scary). Yes, there's a few elaborate "action" set-pieces (like the epic space jump), but these are infrequent and brief. The rest of the game is exactly like Dead Space 1 in terms of tone and scares. After Chapter 5 of Dead Space 2, Titan Station has been mostly evacuated or wiped out by necromorphs. However, all of that is moot, because this only happens for the first 5 chapters. It's still horror, the horror is just more immediate. A lot of people perceive this to be "horror replaced by action" but I don't see it: it's still terrifying, you're still completely outmatched by the monsters etc. I personally loved this, as I've played and seen so many horror games and movies that take place AFTER an outbreak (because that's easier to write and make) and I really appreciated the feeling of being in the middle of one for a change.

This gives the first 5 chapters of Dead Space 2 a different, more immediate energy than the first game. You get to see what a necromorph outbreak actually looks like - and in a civilian population centre, no less. It just had a lot more going on in it that people mistake it for "more action than horror."ĭead Space 2, rather than be a rehash of Dead Space, did something different in that while in Dead Space you arrive on the scene days or even weeks AFTER a necromorph outbreak and massacre, Dead Space 2 has you wake up DURING a necromorph outbreak. Dead Space 2 was extremely heavy on horror. Originally posted by unnamedsoldier:I don’t get the less horror complaint since DS2 was also really light on the horror Nonsense.
